Gold Making Charges in Kuwait: What They Are and How to Negotiate
By Editorial team ·

The gold rate is the same in every shop in Kuwait. The making charge – the fee for design and craftsmanship – is where prices really differ.
Per gram or percentage
Some shops charge a fixed amount per gram (common for plain 21K and 22K items); others use a percentage of the gold value (common for branded and designer pieces). Always ask for the amount in dinar.
What affects the making charge
- Complex, handmade or machine-cut designs cost more.
- Brand and showroom location.
- Light, delicate items have a higher charge per gram.
- Bars and coins have only a small dealer premium.

How to negotiate
- Know today's raw rate (21K 35.017 KWD, 22K 36.685 KWD per gram).
- Compare two or three shops in the same souq.
- Ask for a making-charge discount, especially on heavier items.
- Check exchange or buy-back terms before you pay.

FAQ
Is the making charge refunded when I sell gold?
No. When you sell, the shop pays for the gold content only, minus a small margin.
Do gold bars have making charges?
Only a small premium over the raw price, which falls as the bar gets heavier.
